Packcell 2.2: Flexible Robotic Packing Cell for High-Speed and Mixed-Product End-of-Line Automation (30 Boxes/Min)

VMG Technics implemented an advanced robotic packing cell designed to automate end-of-line packing operations for one of the world’s leading furniture manufacturing and retail groups. The solution was developed to improve packing efficiency, reduce manual labor, and ensure stable product quality in a demanding production environment.

The project represents the next evolution of the Packcell platform, combining high-speed robotic handling with flexible product management capabilities. Unlike traditional packing systems focused exclusively on large-scale production volumes, Packcell 2.2 demonstrates how highly efficient robotic automation can also be successfully adapted for medium-capacity production environments requiring greater flexibility and product variation handling.

The project was delivered in cooperation with trusted technology partners ABB, Lenze, and Beckhoff Automation, ensuring robust automation performance and long-term reliability.

The challenge

VMG Technics solution

To address these challenges, VMG Technics designed and integrated the Packcell 2.2 robotic packing cell into the customer’s existing production line.

01

Full packing process automation

The system automates product transportation, positioning, and robotic loading into boxes.

02

Stable throughput and better ergonomics

Automated packing flow improves operational stability and reduces manual handling for operators.

03

Flexible multi-robot architecture

Packcell 2.2 processes both small and large product formats using different robotic operating modes.

Packcell 2.2 technical solution

01.

Main robotic system

The central element of the cell is the ABB IRB 4600 high-speed robot, responsible for transferring product layers onto a universal positioning table.

The positioning table is designed to simultaneously manage two different product types, allowing the system to process mixed production flows without interrupting operations.

02.

Support robotic system

The cell also includes two ABB IRB 1300 support robots responsible for loading products into boxes.

Depending on product dimensions, the robots operate in two different modes:

  • Individually when handling smaller products
  • In tandem when handling larger components

This dual-operation capability significantly increases system flexibility and enables efficient handling of a wide product range.

03.

Additional automation components

The system additionally integrates:

  • Infeed and outfeed logistics conveyors
  • Product transportation system
  • Universal positioning table for layer separation and product orientation
  • Vacuum gripping technology for safe product handling without surface damage or scratching

The vacuum grippers ensure secure handling while maintaining product surface quality throughout the packing process.
