The automated vision inspection system detects, localizes, and classifies surface defects in real time. The result: earlier defect detection, consistent quality control, and a reduction in defect rate from approximately 3% to 0.9%.
Manual inspection created a simple but costly problem: defects were detected too late – or missed entirely. Quality control depended on continuous operator attention and subjective visual judgement. When a defect was found in one package, an entire pallet could require manual reinspection. The goal was to detect defects earlier and make quality control consistent, repeatable, and independent of human fatigue.
VMG TECHNICS developed PANELSIGHT – an automated vision inspection system integrated directly into the production process. Every panel is inspected from the top and bottom while moving through the line. Four industrial line-scan cameras capture high-resolution surface data. AI algorithms then detect, localize, and classify defects automatically. PANELSIGHT currently inspects white, black, beige, and wood-texture surfaces. The system can be adapted and trained for additional colors, textures, materials, and customer-specific defect types.
